While near-field communication technology is all the rage among merchants right now, tech website ARN asserts smartphone readers won't replace credit card machines anytime soon.Mobile wallets just aren't as convenient as credit cards in their current state. Rather than digging their phones from their pockets, unlocking them, accessing an app and then swiping it in front of a reader, most customers would rather simply swipe their credit cards, the media outlet asserts.
Moreover, the limited adoption of NFC technology is also a hindrance. Many merchants have credit card machines, but they may not have terminals to interact with smartphones. Conversely, few smartphones even come equipped with NFC technology, though the equipment is slowly starting to make its way into more phones.
There are other potential barriers as well. For example, some consumers may have business and personal credit cards, which may make mobile wallets even more bothersome to use.
According to data from comScore, only 80 million Americans possess smartphones and an even smaller number of those smartphones are equipped with NFC technology, which means credit cards will continue to be the more prevalent form of payment for the near future.
