Americans are increasingly fed up with large banks. Whether because of the taxpayer-financed funding they received in the TARP bailout package or the limitations on debit card use and checking accounts, the frustration is clear. Now, a number of consumers may begin transferring their money to credit unions and small community banks ahead of this Saturday's "Bank Transfer Day." According to a poll released this week by Harris Interactive, 9 percent of customers with Bank of America accounts consider themselves "not at all likely" to continue to use the bank.
Our data says that banks absolutely should be worried," said Carol Gstalder, executive vice president of market and customer insights at Harris Interactive. "People know banks are looking for new ways to make up the revenue gap. This may be the start of a tipping point where long term, we may see numbers of people making a move."
But the frustration doesn't appear to be lost on Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan, who took over last year. Despite clear customer vexation, Moynihan has maintained that his institution's approach must be grounded in "values and ethics" in dealing with clients.
