More evidence seems to suggest that, although credit card use may soar in coming years, consumers will be opting for cash and debit this holiday shopping season. While a number of surveys have shown that uncertain economic conditions are encouraging shoppers to put away their cards, part of this reasoning can be attributed to the precise shopping plans Americans are establishing for themselves.
A report released Tuesday by Northwestern Mutual found more than half of U.S. consumers - 52 percent - plan to create some sort of shopping budget this season, and that they intend to adhere to them.
"The past few years have forced us to learn some hard financial lessons about being over leveraged," said Rebekah Barsch, a vice president at Northwestern Mutual, "and it's encouraging that so many Americans recognize the importance of planning and are budgeting their resources to keep holiday spending in check."
While accruing debt through credit cards may be troubling come the new year, cards can be leveraged in a fiscally sound manner. For one, users should ensure timely payments and opt for cards with low balances and low interests during the shopping season.
